2 Comments This is a photograph I captured of Bernini’s famous baldacchino (canopy) in Rome’s St. Peter’s Basilica, a few years ago. At the center of the square there is an Egyptian obelisk, erected at the current place in 1586. The Basilica of St. Peter is an Italian Renaissance church that was designed primarily by Donato Bramante, Gian Lorenzo Bernini,Michelangelo and Carlo Maderno. The Statue of Saint Longinus by Bernini was created for one of the niches at the crossing of St. Peter’s Basilica. At length, on 18 November 1626 Pope Urban VIII solemnly dedicated the Basilica.
