They have to wait for it to melt, and if the ship survives being held in a vice that long, there’s very, if it survives they may get back to the coast, but he thinks increasingly as the days becomes weeks and the weeks become months into 1915, that their expedition is over. So Shackleton and five men head out in a lifeboat that they have sort of converted into sailboat. Who would answer such an ad, which Shackleton placed in a London newspaper seeking recruits for his 1914 Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition? To what extent is that just his personality and to what extent is that calculated? To head back to the whaling station where they had warned Shackleton about the ice being too thick.
